E. Answer the following questions

1. What are the functions of a leaf?
Ans: Plants have different kinds of leaves. We can generally identity a plant by looking at its leaves .
Most of the plants have green leaves which perform various functions.

1. Food preparation :
Green plants prepare their own food by the help of green leaves in the presence of Chlorophyll, sunlight, water and carbon-di-oxide .

2. Respiration : Leaves of the plant contain stomata which help in respiration. Plants absorb or take in carbon-di-oxide and give out oxygen
during photosynthesis through stomata.

3. Prevention of global warming :
Carbon-di-oxide is a green house gas which causes of global warming .
During photosynthesis leaves absorb carbon-di-oxide and release pure , cold oxygen gas . Thus leaves of the plants prevent our environment from global warming.

2. Why are plants called producers?
Ans: Our body can not make food but a plant can makes their own food .

Plants can combine carbon di oxide with water and minerals . The leaves then use these raw materialsin and in the presence of chlorophyll and chlorophyll prepare their own foods.
As the green plants can prepare their own foods therefore plants are called as Producers.

3. How do plants use the food they prepare?
Ans: Plants use the foods to grow and live. Plants store some of the food produced by them for future use.
The extra food prepare by the plants is stored in different parts of the plants such as roots, stem, fruit & seeds .
The stored foods contain Start .

4. Name some roots and stems which store food.
Ans: Plants make food and stored extra in different parts of the plants.

Carrot , radish, turnip, sweet potao, beet are the roots which store foods .

Onion, potato, ginger, garlic, turmeric, sugarcane are the stems in which foods are stored .

5. Can green plants make their food at night? Why?

Ans: No plants can not make their foods in the night .

The plants make their own foods by the process of photosynthesis ( photo means light and synthesis means prepare )

Since this process take place in the
presence of sunlight which is available during whole day plants can not make their foods in the night.

F. Name the following:

1. Kitchen of a plant green leaves .

2. Lines on a leaf       a number of veins .

3. The process of preparation of food by plants is called           photosynthesis .

4. The flat broad part of a leaf 5. The food made by the leaves  is lamina .

5. The food made by the leaves is  Starch .
